Pregnancy and Diabetes Mellitus

The dust cover of this book asserts that "the opinions and advice offered here are based upon the author's personal experience with almost 600 cases of diabetic pregnancy as well as analysis of a vast amount of literature in the field." Many writers use the ugly word "case" as a synonym for "patient," a deplorable practice which suggests a lack of sympathy or empathy or understanding of sick people, but, assuming that the enthusiastic writer of the dust cover meant that the author had observed or treated 600 pregnant diabetic women, I could hardly wait to read this book carefully, for the pregnant diabetic presents many problems and few physicians have had such a large personal experience. I soon got a shock. As far as I could discover from Chapter 1, the author took personal charge of 53 pregnant diabetic women and not 600. Another 501 patients stemmed from other . . .
