This volume has become something of a classic since it first appeared in 1953, when the authors were working at the Neurological Unit of the Boston City Hospital. Dr. Adams has since removed to the Massachusetts General Hospital in charge of that Department of Neurology, and Dr. Pearson to Los Angeles with the Department of Medicine at the University of California School of Medicine. Dr. Denny-Brown remains in charge of the Neurological Unit at the Boston City Hospital.

The preface to the first edition opened with the sentence: "Diseases of skeletal muscle do not fall within the province of any one department of medicine." It is remarkable with what studied indifference a basic tissue such as muscle was treated in the pathological laboratories of English-speaking countries until about the time that this book first made its appearance.
