I had hoped when I got hold of Kleckner's Cirrhosis of the Liver that here finally would be a treatise both critical and encyclopedic with a searching selection and evaluation of the multitudinous body of new information which has made a knowledge of liver disease and perhaps especially cirrhosis increasingly important. But, unhappily, it is not to be found in Kleckner's massive, well-illustrated, and well-printed volume. Basically the book is a bibliography, but not a critical bibliography, and unevenly annotated. There is not so much selection as a great volume and mass of material. Certainly if anyone wishes to look up the subject of ascites he can find a vast number of papers quoted in this book. But they are not evaluated critically. Many of the illustrations are excellent and serve a useful purpose, but the book will be useful chiefly as a reference to put one on the road . . .
