Collecting medical biography has been an avocation and one of my minor sins for some years now. I have more than 150 biographies, mostly medical but anything goes. In size they range from the three volumes that Ernest Jones did on Sigmund Freud (as well as Jones' own autobiography) to biographies of small scope and compass. Of some people, I have as many as three different biographies; Weir Mitchell somehow falls into this category. My growing group of books by and about Osler and the books by and about Drake constitute relatively large holdings in a small library whose size is determined by academic fiscal anemia rather than shelf space.
All medical historians and anyone interested in medicine's great men will be delighted that John L. Thornton, who is librarian at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and his assistants, Monk and Brooke, have brought out a select bibliography of medical and scientific
