Barry Ulanov, who has cut no small figure as a jazz expert, formerly edited such up-to-the-minute musical journals as Metronome, Listen, and Swing. Also he is the author of A Handbook of Jazz. This is a most unlikely background for a person who has gathered an anthology about death. This is not a general anthology, being chiefly addressed to Christians. The passages, mostly short, have been excerpted from the works of believers, mystics, prophets, and priests. The book itself might prove useful to a physician particularly in dealing with the families of chronically ill or dying patients. It will have little or no appeal to those without strong religious feeling and convictions. On the whole it suffers from the failure to include pre-Christian philosophers or those who differ in any way from the main tenets of Christian beliefs, particularly as expressed in the Roman Catholic tradition.
