Dr. Allen published the first edition of The Kidney in 1951, and this second edition not only is an enlargement but contains many new features. It is both an ambitious and a difficult task for any one man to compile a comprehensive text on the kidney, for it must embody anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the clinical disciplines.
The book contains sixteen chapters on such diverse subjects as embryology, anatomy, physiology, uremia, malformations, renal rickets, tumors, and histological artifacts. The usual problems of diseases of the glomeruli, tubules, pyelonephritis, the nephrotic syndrome, interstitial nephritis, and renal calculi are also covered. Practically all of the many excellent photomicrographs of various renal diseases are taken from postmortem and operative material and very few from needle biopsies. The pathological interpretations reflect the fact that Dr. Allen is a good pathologist with an understanding of renal pathology. In the introduction the author refers to the
