I. Introduction

It is always good to see old friends, and the Heart Association is a friend to the people of New York—and in a special way to those like myself who have worked with it behind the scenes.

I think people of stature in the field of medicine tend to emphasize what remains to be done, rather than what has been done. If we rest on our laurels too much we get so used to resting that movement becomes painful. Yet we can learn from an occasional glance at the road that has been traveled.

Most of us are so accustomed to the New York City Heart Association that it is hard to believe that it was only formed in 1915, not very long ago as the earth erodes and man evolves, but quite far back from the point of view of modern medicine.
