During the past two years the Editor and members of the Editorial Board many times have gone to colleagues to get their critical advice about manuscripts submitted for publication. While final judgment on all editorial matters belongs exclusively to the editors, it may be guided by experts in many spheres of activity who are not on the Editorial Board. In addition, thoughtful readers of the Archives of Internal Medicine sometimes give us the benefit of their suggestions or complaints. After all, though editors sometimes forget it, to succeed a journal must have a substantial group of readers. We must interest them as much as possible, inform and instruct often, and occasionally illuminate or elevate. Unlike the performance of actors on the stage, the role of editing a journal is more like being on television or radio or talking into a machine for later reproduction.
