Accumulating evidence indicates that Hashimoto's disease (struma lymphomatosa) is a hereditary disorder with thyroid autoantibodies (Witebsky ¹ and Roitt²). This is shown by a number of family studies. Dunning ³ reported three cases in one family. Hall et al ⁴ demonstrated "circulating autoantibodies in 22 out of 39 siblings of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease," and De-Groot et al⁵ found autoantibodies in low titers in five out of seven members of a family with this disease. When Irvine et al⁶ described the condition in two sets of identical twins, it gave further proof of the hereditary nature of the condition. We are reporting the third set of identical twins.

Report of Cases

A 22-year-old white female, one of identical twins, (case 1) was admitted to Mercy Hospital Nov 13, 1961, for an enlarged thyroid of seven months' duration.
