Dr. Gibson, who made a fine contribution to medical history by praising youth in his book entitled Young Endeavor, a sort of anthology of contributions of medical students to the advancement of medicine, has now given us another reason for indebtedness to him by discussing the scientific, humanistic, and cultural contributions of physicians of all ages. We are introduced to Baron Larrey, that magnificent surgeon general of Napoleon's army whose contributions to humanity were made on the battlefield. He was the devoted admirer and slave of Napoleon who certainly reciprocated in admiration for Larrey. In addition to his ministrations to a multiple of wounded soldiers that staggers the imagination, he recognized the urgency of promptness in caring for the wounded. He developed field ambulances, an approach to modern battalion aid stations, and field hospitals which must have been great morale builders though how effective they were in the days before . . .
