Let the buyer beware! This is no ordinary medical text to be reviewed at leisure. Quite the contrary. If the book is to be used properly it must be studied with the greatest vigilance and effort. Nor can it be read most profitably in mental isolation. The reader has to marshal his life experiences as healer and human being and use them to understand the book. Seldom have I acquired a volume that makes such great demands upon the reader.

The book requires such effort partly because of its wide range of content, and partly because of its transcendent honesty. It touches on all human experiences in health and disease. It skirts no issues. It does not oversimplify, but it does not try to be exact where there is no knowledge.
