Steroid-Induced Gastric Ulcer

THE HE NUMEROUS REPORTS on gastric ulcer associated with adrenal steroid therapy show little agreement on pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, frequency of occurrence, radiologic appearance, duration and amount of steroid therapy necessary to induce pathologic change, and the appropriate treatment of such ulcers.

There have been inadequate control studies correlating clinical, gross, and microscopic findings in steroid-induced gastric ulcer in man. Several investigators 1-3 have noted pathologic differences in isolated cases or in small series.

The present study was undertaken to determine whether the clinical course and pathology of the gastric ulcer developing during the administration of adrenal steroids differ from those of other gastric ulcers.

As used herein, the term "steroid" shall mean adrenal corticosteroid and the term "steroid ulcer" shall mean a gastric ulcer developing in association with adrenocorticosteroid therapy.
