Familial Melanoma

FAMILIAL melanoma originating in sites other than the eye was first recorded by Cawley in 1952.1 Since then several authors have reported 31 additional instances in which two or more family members were afflicted.2-7 Included in this group are five families in which three relatives had malignant melanoma and two families in which four relatives were afflicted with the disease. Although there is considerable information available on the hereditary patterns of melanoma in animals, there is still relatively little corresponding data in humans with this tumor. The following report describes the occurrence of malignant melanoma in a mother and a son and represents the 33rd recording of extraocular familial melanoma.
