Molecular Biology of the Gene. By James D. Watson. Price: $11.00 hardback; $5.95 paperback. Pp 494. W. A. Benjamin, Inc., 1 Park Ave, New York 10016, 1965.

For myself these books are bad news since they permit no display of private factual erudition. The style is faultless because Ingram and Watson are recognized authorities in molecular biology who have no need of pseudoscientific turgid anonymity. Even the modest amount of overlap is beyond reviewer's wrath; the authors' sound pedagogy make the repetitions the more valuable because they show how two men interpret the same experiments. Lucky is the college freshman whose instructors use these texts.

The Biosynthesis of Macromolecules begins with a discussion of base-pairing and the replication of DNA, progresses to a discussion of RNA synthesis, and then tells some of the methods by which the sequence of purines and pyrimidines in RNA is detected.
