This short book is a pleasant surprise. Tom was a man with a gastric fistula who was observed and studied by the author over a 17 year period. The human and scientific story of Tom is the framework upon which this book is built. A short review of gastric mechanics, secretions, and the regulation and control of gastric function is presented. Something of the properties of mucus and the mucous membrane is also given. From this introductory material the effect of various physical and pharmacological agents on gastric function is considered. The basis of gastric symptoms and the common abnormalities of motility and secretion, atrophy, and ulcer are considered. A wealth of material on ulcer and psychosomatic effects on the stomach is included.
