Gastric Perforation Caused by Splenic Sarcoma

PERFORATION of the stomach by extragastric lesions is exceedingly rare. The purpose of this report is to document gastric perforation by a primary splenic tumor unrecognized during life. This tumor presented as a splenic mass in a patient with hepatic schistosomiasis and esophageal varices, suggesting the presence of portal hypertension.

Report of a Case

A 37-year-old Puerto Rican woman was admitted because of vague left upper abdominal discomfort of two months' duration, described as an intermittent aching sensation, unrelated to meals or bowel habits. There was no history of anorexia, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, jaundice, or hematuria. The patient was born in Puerto Rico and lived there until the age of 18 years, when she came to the United States.
