As Dr. Nolan Lewis, a dean of American psychiatry, says in his foreword, this is a unique book; it is the first one written for schizophrenic patients, telling them how to live with their disease. I have found the book very interesting, very instructive, and very hopeful. At last it looks as if something could be done to cure the commonest form of psychosis. Also, it is hopeful to learn that the niacin treatment was not chosen haphazardly, but because it has a relation to the studies which have all indicated that the chemistry of the schizophrenic's body is abnormal, and that is his disease.

The authors speak of the "myth"—still believed by many psychiatrists—that mothers cause the schizophrenia of their child by some form of bad training.
