I am writing these lines during the season of commencements, class reunions, and other traditional campus celebrations. Now I know that in this questioning age there is a good deal of scoffing about the real value of such pageantry, and these ceremonies have even been satirized in some irreverent quarters. But while it is true that there has in recent years been a shedding of many illusions as they have been exposed by experience, the central core of the college experience as it is expressed in the graduation ritual is still respected and commands public recognition. However confused the educational scene, in this particular ritual there is an implicit recognition that at the time of graduation the university and all that it stands for comes to a focus and is embodied in the individual. This is an important article of the popular faith and, I believe, a sound one.
