The first and second editions of The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics by Goodman and Gilman were published in 1941 and 1955 respectively, and achieved international recognition as outstanding textbooks in a wide and difficult field. The third edition has been eagerly awaited, and the traditions established previously will undoubtedly be strengthened and extended by the present version which fulfills every expectation.
There have been a number of alterations, the most striking of which is the change to multiple authorship. A total of 76 chapters are now written by 42 well known contributors and edited by Professors Goodman and Gilman. This change reflects the enormous difficulties inherent in writing, revising, and updating such a comprehensive work in a rapidly changing and expanding field.
