In recent times the study of human palaeopathology in the United States has had little following with the result that it has produced no major publication in the last 30 years. It was in consequence of this situation and in the hope of fostering a recovery of wider interest that a symposium on human palaeopathology was organized and held in Washington, DC, in January 1965. The book under consideration represents the published proceedings, both the major papers and the full discussions of them. It begins with a history of the study of human palaeopathology in the United States, its present situation and current needs, by Saul Jarcho, organizer of the symposium and editor of these published results. Further immediate problems are dealt with by T. Dale Stewart and Walter G. J. Putschar, both of whom suggest the necessity for revision of some earlier judgments made on the basis of inadequate
