As the winter snows become gray patches on the western slopes of the hillsides in the northeast, and as the midwest begins to defrost, a light, sweet-smelling green freshens the south—and spring comes into our land with a warmth and grace that rings reveille and renewal. The short and somber dark days of winter recede; outdoor playtime seems possible; and as the birds exercise their migrations, so do the men of medicine begin their annual pilgrimages to the meeting halls. Springtime for medicine means the yearly conclaves—the American College of Physicians, the Federated Societies, the Atlantic City, NJ, sessions of academe, the annual convention of the American Medical Association—and it is at this time that a sharp and highly focused stock-taking occurs which sets the course for next year's ventures.
