The "interferon response" is a loose term which connotes at least two distinct processes, the production and the action of interferon. These processes may be examined as they occur in the animal or in some in vitro cell-culture system. Understanding the factors which underlie and those which modify them is essential in anticipation of any clinical use of the interferon system. In this communication, we will emphasize those factors which are relevant in man or animal, and reference will be made to in vitro systems if they illuminate what happens in the host. We will begin with the factors which influence the production of interferon and then describe the factors which influence its action.
