It is a sadness, but it is always easier to review bad books or dreadful plays than good ones. This may be related to some intellectual perversion peculiar to reviewers. (How can one be lancinatingly clever when obliged to say nice things about the book?) But the selection of fare for newspaper and magazines stories and the eternal popularity of tangy gossip suggest that there might be more public interest generated by needle and burr than by balm and kudo.

But there are great plays and books that even the most acerbic critic must acknowledge and applaud. Such a book is the sixth edition of Duncan's Diseases of Metabolism.

Philip K. Bondy has taken the splendid Duncan of the past, and with the aid of 33 luminous coauthors, has created a superior 1969 rendition. It comes in two volumes: "Genetics" and "Metabolism" in the first and "Endocrinology" and "Nutrition" in . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
