Grete Bibring, clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard and psychiatrist-in-chief at the Beth Israel Hospital from 1946 to 1965, not only is a wise and experienced psychoanalyst but also in her position in a general hospital has long been engaged in teaching psychological principles to those who care for patients with physical illnesses. Over the years she has attempted to provide students, physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and dieticians with a general framework that would help them to deal knowledgably with the psychological problems of their patients.

This book is based on lectures she has given over the years in the course of fulfilling this objective.
