Dr. Meerschwam has prepared a monograph on a very interesting condition known, in the United States, mostly, as idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. He has painstakingly followed a series of his own patients, reviewed the world literature on the subject, and prepared a most thorough bibliography. He has been very critical of the information he has reviewed and has not fallen into the trap of lumping a number of myocardiopathies under the same heading.

Certainly, at this stage of confusion regarding the etiology of the cardiomyopathies, an author must be exceedingly careful not to confuse the picture further with muddy classification. The book is very easy to read, the illustrations are excellent, and all of the presently appreciated major manifestations of this disease are included and given adequate coverage.
