This fascinating, profusely illustrated, and beautifully printed little volume on medical history should prove a useful and thoughtful gift for the medical student, house officer or physician friend. "B. J." as he is affectionately known, spent over four years delving into original and rare documents in the National Library of Medicine (originally the Army Surgeon General's Library), the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Army Medical Historical Unit, and the Army Library in preparation for and in writing this superb monograph. Meticulously referenced and indexed, and carefully annotated, it contains a wealth of enlightening medical history, illustrating the interwoven fabric of military and civilian preventive medicine, which is presented in chronological sequence.
