I am truly pleased to have had the opportunity to help develop the program for this symposium. Let me emphasize, however, that G. Donald Whedon, MD, Benjamin Burton, PhD, Keatha Krueger, PhD, Victoria Ragin, Henry R Black, MD, and his colleagues have done all of the hard work to make this possible. We are especially indebted to our colleagues from abroad who came a long distance to help make this endeavor a success; especially Carmelo Giordano, MD, Sergio Giovannetti, MD, R. Kluthe, MD, E. Kinsey M. Smith, MD, and Douglas A. K. Black, MD.

None of us who have been involved in this program have any notion that you will leave these communications with the knowledge of what the uremic toxins are, their source, their size, or their composition.
