Foreign Medical Graduates

To the Editor.—

The article titled "The Foreign Medical Graduate as a Medical Resource" by Bergen and Lenoble that appeared in the ARCHIVES (135:1613-1616, 1975) is an insult to the intelligence and the self-esteem of the American foreign medical graduates (FMGs).

Most of the FMGs are American citizens who love and respect this country. They and their families are assimilated into the mainstream of the American culture, bringing their own traditions and cultures with them.

Dr Bergen questions the adaptability of the FMGs to the American culture. I do not believe that the FMGs are in any way different from all the citizens who have immigrated to this country before and after its official inception and who also have contributed (among other things) to the creation of medical schools, from which Dr Bergen and other critics of FMGs have graduated.
