This book is a report of an international symposium that was held in St Moritz, Switzerland, on Jan 7 and 8, 1974. There are a large group of papers given by authorities in many countries throughout the world—from experts on depression in Japan to psychiatrists in the West (including psychiatrists from Canada and the United States). While the focus of the symposium is on the treatment of depressed patients and "everyday practice" and the treatment of depressed patients on an ambulatory basis, the reports of this symposium certainly do not comprise a complete manual for the diagnosis and treatment of depression by internists or family practice physicians. In actuality, the papers are quite limited in focus and represent only a brief review of either existing literature or existing practice and are in general confined to overviews of existing trends in the current treatment of depressed patients by psychiatrists.
