In the article titled "Self Hemodialysis: The Optimal Mode of Dialytic Therapy" by Drs Jenkins, Gutmann, and Rieselbach, which appears in this issue, they have been hampered by the same problem that has beset politicians as well as physicians in the end-stage renal disease program. The problem is that few recent detailed data regarding treatment results are available. The authors' review compares different dialysis techniques from different centers obtained at different time periods. These data are displayed in their Table 2. Only two of the studies listed in the table contain large numbers of patients treated in the same center by different modalities, allowing adequate comparisons to be made. The data from these two studies^1,2 seem to favor some form of in-center rather than home dialysis if survival were to be the major criterion.
