The monograph is compiled from a course in infectious diseases presented to a group of physicians and paramedical personnel in the practice of general medicine. There are 28 lectures, and an apparently verbatim presentation of two wide-ranging panel discussions. Of the 29 authors, seven are specialists in clinical or laboratory infectious disease, and the others represent various disciplines.

The chapters are loosely organized into four units. The first lists immunization recommendations, presents several aspects of skin testing, and reviews briefly the epidemiology of a number of contagious diseases. The second includes an excellent chapter on the compromised host, and a brief chapter on interpretation of white blood cell counts. The third unit discusses clinical syndromes associated with five groups of bacterial agents: anaerobic microorganisms, staphylococci, Pseudomonas, Candida species, and clostridial gangrene.
