This second edition is almost twice the size of the first edition of 1965. The general outline remains the same, except for an additional chapter on liver function during therapy.
A brief historic introduction is followed by a well-illustrated description of gross anatomy and microstructure of the liver. Chapters on clinical and laboratory evaluation of liver diseases, bile metabolism and excretion, reticuloendothelial system, and liver cell function are necessarily brief. A presentation of basic hepatic physiology is included. Newly acquired knowledge about the hepatitis B antigen and the influence of steroid therapy on the course of chronic active hepatitis is summarized. Issues like gallstone dissolution with chenodeoxycholic acid, indication for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and the association of vinyl chloride exposure and hepatic angiosarcoma are mentioned.
