This is the first of what is now a four-volume, third edition of Gastroenterology edited by a well-known clinician, Henry Bockus. It is a monumental work; however, with all due respect, it is somewhat difficult to ascertain whether the book is primarily a monument or primarily a work in gastroenterology. The first edition appeared 30 years ago and the second only ten. The editor indicates that earlier authors were included by virtue of their association with the University of Pennsylvania. The present contributors are said to be selected on the basis of their "reputable expertise." Even assuming no derogatory intent, there have been some excellent authors deleted and the same added. One of the latter, Walter Palmer has written an introductory 17-page history of modern gastroenterology. There are few who could write such a history and none so well.
