This monograph is essentially an expanded, largely rewritten, and upto-date review of a previous monograph by the same author entitled Collagen Diseases, which was published in 1956. The diseases that are included are systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, and polyarteritis nodosa. Some may quibble with the grouping of these disorders under the term collagen diseases, and even the newer title of collagen-vascular diseases, in that these diseases are neither primary diseases of collagen, or even of vessels. Alternative names currently used to describe the same group of disorders are connective tissue diseases, autoimmune diseases, or rheumatic diseases. The title, nevertheless, will be understood by most physicians.
A chapter is devoted to each disease, using a classical format that includes historical background, incidence, etiologic factors, pathogenesis, clinical findings, laboratory diagnosis, course, and treatment. Each chapter is excellently referenced, and is abudantly illustrated. Illustrations totaling 176 are all in black and white,
