In this and the preceding issue of the ARCHIVES, a series of articles is presented on diabetes mellitus. Despite the long-standing recognition of diabetes as a disease entity, much new information regarding its cause, pathophysiology, and treatment (current as well as future treatment) has been generated in the last several years. This symposium, while not purporting to be a comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes, provides an update of a variety of new concepts by active investigators in the field.

The genetic heterogeneity of diabetes and the interaction of acquired and inherited factors in the cause of diabetes are well summarized by Ganda and Soeldner.¹ Bar and Roth review alterations in insulin receptor function that provide a cellular basis for resistance to the action of insulin in certain circumstances.² The role of intrahepatic metabolism and insulin-glucagon interactions in determining the rate of ketogenesis is explored by McGarry . . .
