Artificial heart update

A Holstein calf that lived 184 days has set a world record for survival with an artificial heart.

The totally synthetic heart is made of polyurethane, unlike many experimental artificial hearts that use biological material. Tests are under way at the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, where the heart was implanted, to determine whether the material is altered in any way during implantation.

During the first 100 days, the male calf grew rapidly and exercised vigorously. Then, according to John Lawson, PhD, a growth developed that partially occluded the inflow valve, reducing cardiac output. The calf died during attempts to implant a replacement artificial heart.
