This book consists of eight monographs relating to the impact of the menopause on the skeleton and the subsequent development of osteopenia and osteoporosis in women at risk. The articles are generally well written and edited. The volume will be of considerable help to physicians with a special interest in the menopause, metabolic bone diseases, and geriatrics. Background material is provided, but proper evaluation of the material will require the reader to have experience in the field. One major problem with the book is that a chapter devoted primarily to a discussion of skeletal dynamics does not initiate the volume. Consequently, each contributor makes brief reference to one or more aspects of skeletal metabolism in handling the assigned topic, but neither the terms nor concepts employed are consistent among the contributors. An opening chapter on skeletal dynamics to which subsequent contributors could refer would have been helpful.
