To the Editor.

—Owing to the lack of available data on the T-lymphocyte subsets in drug abusers without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS),¹ we have read with interest the article by Layon et al,² published in the July 1984 issue of the ARCHIVES. In their study, an inversion of the helpersuppressor ratio was observed in 12 of the 16 cases. We herein describe an immunologic study of 15 heterosexual drug abusers, none of whom had AIDS, who were hospitalized for infectious diseases.

The 15 patients were all men except one (patient 14); their ages ranged from 16 to 33 years, with a mean age (±SD) of 22.6 ±4.3 years. Heroin was the main drug abused, with 14 patients injecting the drug intravenously and one (patient 5) using it nasally.
