Seldom does a book's forward capture the essence of the work as effectively as does the introduction to "A Practice of Cardiac Pacing" by Furman et al. The authors accurately state that there is already a wealth of literature concerning cardiac pacing, most multiauthored, and extensively referenced. The intent of this book was to provide the reader with a synopsis of cardiac pacing as viewed by a very small group of elite pacemaker specialists. The goal was to provide a readable, accessible tutorial responsive to the needs of the less experienced worker, and valuable to the more experienced (the authors are to be congratulated for achieving their goal). The book is a rather well-written summary of the state-of-the-art of cardiac pacing written in language that makes it highly interpretable for the novice.
