To the Editor.
—The issue of the degree of blood pressure control and levels of -glutamyl transferase (S-GGT) discussed in the article published by Winickoff and coworkers1 originated from a Swedish work,2 not Finnish, as written. This study is an ongoing part of a prospective study in Malmö, Sweden, where more than 25000 men and women have been screened.3,4 In a recent follow-up of the referred hypertensive men (n = 542), all born between 1926 and 1934, and followed up from 1974 to 1985, the drop-out rate was 1.9%.5 The total mortality rate was significantly lower (P =.005) than in the age-corrected background population in Malmö (42 and 71 deaths per 10 000 per year, respectively). As suspected, the mortality rate in the nonscreened 25% of the whole population was more than double, 101 deaths per 10 000 per year.
