The influence of race on the relationships of hemoglobin A₁ (Hb A₁)1) to lipids was reported by Semenkovich et al.¹1 The authors observed a lack of significant positive correlation of Hb A₁% to the concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in black women.

Others, along with me, made some observations in the freshly detected type II diabetic women in Madras, South India (V.R.K., V. Seshaiah, MD, A. Sundaram, MD, et al, unpublished observations, 1989). We found a lack of correlation of Hb A₁ to triglycerides in women (n = 22; r=.069).
