The comments made by Krause are very important. Health care students are not classified as hospital employees, thus the Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed standards as Written will not apply to these individuals. Given the risks of hepatitis B virus infection in health care students,¹ however, some action appears necessary. The Association of American Medical Colleges has submitted a comment letter to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration expressing concern about this and other issues involving the proposed standards.² Schools of dentistry, medicine, and nursing, along with other health care training programs will undoubtedly have to devise other means to ensure that their students receive vaccination.

The strategy for hepatitis B prevention recommended by the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee to vaccinate those individuals at high risk of infection has been unsuccessful in helping eradicate the disease.
