I would like to thank Chapdelaine for his interest in my study.¹ Some of his concerns have already been expressed in the editorial by Grundy² that accompanied my article. I would, however, like to respond to some of the concerns.

While it is true that most of the subjects of my study were from a select population (upper class, white, highly motivated), the results show that most individuals do, indeed, respond to lifestyle modification with major reductions in serum lipid levels. Of the 4587 subjects, 91% reduced their total cholesterol levels and 88% reduced their triglyceride levels. This would indicate that many individuals presently taking medication to lower lipid levels, with long-term side effects unknown, could use life style modification as recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program.
