In a previous study,¹ we have developed a model for diagnosis of bacterial urinary tract infection [UTI] in young women with dysuria. We were able to divide a derivation and a validation set of dysuric women into three groups with a significant increase in the prevalence of bacterial UTI, using the following equation: ln [P/(1-P)] =-1.01 + 1.72Leu+1.65Hem+1.12Sx-1.19Vd-0.1Du, where P is the probability of bacterial UTI in a given patient ; Leu, 10 or more leukocytes per high power field in a microscopic examination of the urine; Hem, 5 erythrocytes per high-power field; Sx, at least one sexual intercourse in the last month; Vd, vaginal discharge (for all the above, yes has a value of 1 and no a value of 0); and Du, duration of complaints in days.
