Harrow's experiences are illuminating as to some of the opportunities for and problems in teaching gynecology to internal medicine residents. Certainly, guidelines that minimize referrals for routine gynecologic problems can increase residents' exposure to managing these problems themselves. However, sufficient exposure to gynecologic problems to allow residents to feel comfort in their management may necessitate increased resident rotations in clinics with large numbers of women with gynecologic problems.

We agree that the barriers to having internists learn skills in managing pregnant patients are unfortunate; perhaps departments of medicine need to talk more with departments of obstetrics and gynecology to facilitate learning experiences in gynecology for nonobstetricians. . . .
