Thomas et al1 report on the risk of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infection in health care workers. Outbreaks of hepatitis A have also been reported on in health care workers.2 To evaluate the risk of exposure to hepatitis A virus, we determined the prevalence of anti—hepatitis A virus IgG antibodies among the employees of a hospital.3 For each age group, results for the nursing staff (n=406) were compared with those for nonmedical employees (office workers and technicians) (n=132).
In the 20- to 30-year-old age bracket, the prevalence of anti—hepatitis A virus IgG was low among both the nursing staff (27%) and the other staff (22%). However, in the 30- to 40-year-old age bracket, the prevalence in the nursing staff was significantly higher than that found among the other staff (59% vs 32%, P<.001); this was also the case for the over 40-year-old age groups
