We appreciate the comments by Schwandt and colleagues. After our review of the available data, we concluded that "the current literature does not support a relationship between low or lowered cholesterol levels and violent behavior." Not all would agree with our conclusion.
The public health implications of lowering cholesterol levels to decrease the incidence of premature coronary heart disease are critical. Any uncertainty about the safety of cholesterol lowering by means of diet modification or drug therapy will compromise the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
For these reasons, we believe that further investigations to confirm the safety of cholesterol lowering are indicated.
