I always told the medical students and housestaff in my medical center, who often carried different kinds of stethoscopes, usually to impress their sweethearts or patients, that what really counts is between the 2 earpieces.1 In view of the recent report by Marinella et al2 that the stethoscope is a potential source of nosocomial infection, I should now preach that what really matters with any stethoscope is the chest piece between the patient and the physician.
