We thank Lisi for responding to our article on alcoholrelated problems in older persons.¹ As she states, we could not have included in our analysis the 2 studies she mentions, because they became available after the completion of our data collection. We are therefore grateful that she has brought them to our attention and think that the readers of the ARCHIVES can benefit greatly from the publication of her letter.

The study by Joseph et al² investigated the prevalence of alcohol use disorders in a cross-sectional analysis of patients aged 50 years and older who were admitted to a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center nursing home. The researchers used a number of available screening instruments and DSM-III-R criteria and found that the prevalence of lifetime alcohol abuse and dependence was high.
