The data presented here form part of the observations made on the vital capacity in cases of hyperthyroidism. Although a number of such observations have been made in a wide range of similar cases of varying severity, it would be unwise at the present time to formulate definite conclusions of too sweeping a character. Sufficient has, however, been done to demonstrate the clinical utility of the test, and to stimulate further studies.

Although this laboratory procedure is old1 it has not received, relatively, the same consideration as have many other laboratory methods. This, in great part, was due to the lack of knowledge of certain factors which must govern the interpretation of findings, presenting such wide, and at times irregular variations, even in the normal subject. The very thorough work of Dreyer, Peabody and Wentworth, Lundsgaard and Van Slyke, and West2 in establishing "normals" as units for comparison demonstrates that . . .
